Online Competition And Your Small Business

Times change, and your business must innovate and change with those change the times. The other day, I was talking to an individual at the local coffee shop. He ran a specialty shop and had catalogs he sent out and he was well-known in his industry. He did telemarketing sales, had catalogs, and did a tremendous amount of marketing. He was the go to guy for his particular business niche. He told me that he retired about 15 years ago, and he was very glad to get out when he did. He explained to me that the "information highway" as it was called back then had competition popping up all over the place.

It didn't matter that he had an incredible amount of experience, the best products, or a huge customer list. Soon his customers were asking him to match price with those online. Some of those that had websites were offering products they didn't even have, that only he made, and then they would try to place large orders with him, and sell those products to his former customers online. He said it was getting a little crazy, so he sold his business. The business she sold is no longer around, the new owner merged it with a dot com around the year 2000 just prior to the crash.

Apparently the individual he sold to also made money, but not from selling products, rather from selling the business. Fast-forward to today, and you must understand if you have a small business you are competing with online businesses that may have little or no cost, and you are competing while you still have to pay for the inventory, your location, and everything that goes with running a brick-and-mortar store, all the while your competition doesn't have any of those reoccurring obligations and costs.

Often, you are buying from the same supplier at the same price, but your costs are higher, therefore you get into a price war you just can't compete. There is a way to compete however, and there are many products in which the people want to actually see before they take delivery of it, thus the justification for a real store, they don't wish to go online and buy something because they don't trust it. Still, even though there are good reasons not to trust online venues as a consumer, more and more customers are taking that risk, it is making it harder and harder for many brick-and-mortar small businesses to compete.

Some say if you can't beat them you should join them, and perhaps that's my advice to you. Perhaps you should have an extra room in your business just for online sales along with whatever you are doing already. Rather than complaining about "who stole your cheese" maybe it's time to realize that the world has changed and it's time for you to change with it. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Make Money Online Selling - Best 2 Money Making Tips That I Ever Heard

You must stay motivated when doing business on the internet. Negative forces will only do harm to your motivation and eventually will hurt your business too.

#1 - Selling the Website A website is like an investment in property. So you can sell them too. There are number of ways to do that, and any large hosting provider would have a service like this, for selling websites. You may do it intentionally, or using it to generate cash for some other investment. A website's value is coming from its monthly cash flow generating capability.

You may decide on a strategy, that you start to build a few websites, and you plan a per month revenue. If the site performs under the expectation, you put it for sale to clean your portfolio, and invest the money in new ones. The ones you keep are the best performing sites. The sales price is really depending on a lot of things, niche, buyer expectation, maturity of the site etc. You can also get your site value evaluated!

#2 - Make Money with eBay The easiest way for a beginner is to buy cheap, sell expensive formula. On garage sales and other sources you can get to bargain deals, and then resell the items on eBay with good profit. It is a lot of work, but a good start. You can also start by selling of your own unused items on eBay. You will be amazed on what people will buy: used books and equipment, toys. I have even sold some of my plants, my used lighters when quit smoking etc. It is a great feeling that you make money from your "trash" items.

I Have a New Product Now - How Can I Sell It Online?

The other day, I was talking to a gal who has a new invention, it's a great invention, but I am not at liberty to discuss it, because she hasn't got a patent yet. Indeed, she would like to sell it online, but doesn't know how. Perhaps you are in the same situation as an innovator, entrepreneur, or inventor. That's something that we are good at as Americans, coming up with original thoughts and new products.

Things that will solve problems for people and make their life easier, things which people desire, and they're willing to pay for. Best of all, you could be rewarded because we enjoy free-market capitalism to a large degree here the US. Now then, where should she go from here? Should she get her own website, one, which allows for e-commerce sales? Therefore she can take credit cards online, and then ship out the products?

Would it be better to let Amazon handle the whole thing, or eBay, and sell her wares online there, since they already have everything set up? Is it worth paying Amazon 30% to do this? Should she bypass that and get her own website saving that 30%? Well, there's lots of things to think about in this regard, for instance if you have your own website you don't have good cyber security, and a hacker comes along and steals all those credit card numbers, you just caused a huge problem for everyone that was ever bought anything on your website.

In this day and age it's almost impossible to keep everything safe, therefore selling on Amazon makes a lot of sense. Would it be better for her to get affiliate marketers, so they can sell her product on their websites as well? What if her product is so simple that others can copy it, how could she prevent them from stealing her design and selling it themselves, perhaps even for a lower price?

Even if she gets a website, how can she be sure that she will be drowned out by other people using the same keywords in the search engines? Worse, what if someone copies her product, ranks higher in the search engine, and is stealing her design? We know this happens all the time with big brand name products, so obviously it happens even more often with companies that can't defend themselves with patent attorneys to go after these folks who rip them off.

Yes, these are all things to consider in this regard, and how you approach your sales online is very important to how many products you sell, therefore how much money you make. If you go do all this and you don't make much money, why do it? And, there's a lot of competition out there. So, just because you have a great product, doesn't mean it will sell unless you can get people to come to your website, or find your products on Amazon through links from your website or social media page. Indeed I hope you will please consider all these things and think on it.
